What Happened?
Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) announced today that they have entered into a definitive agreement to acquire McAfee, Inc. (NYSE: MFE) through the purchase of all of the company’s common stock at $48 per share in cash, for approximately $7.68 billion.
As reported, McAfee will operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary, reporting into Intel’s Software and Services Group. The acquisition enables a combination of security software and hardware from one company to ultimately better protect consumers, corporations and governments as billions of devices - and the server and cloud networks that manage them - go online.
According to Intel, this acquisition elevates their focus on security on par with energy-efficient performance and connectivity. The acquisition augments Intel’s mobile wireless strategy, helping to better assure customer and consumer security concerns as these billions of devices connect.
VDC’s View
Intel has made a number of software acquisitions including two reported on by VDC in the recent past – Wind River Systems and Virtutech. McAfee has been developing a strategy around mobile devices through a series of their own acquisitions. The last one being the agreement to acquire privately owned tenCube, the provider of the WaveSecure mobile security service.
As Intel increasingly competes with ARM in the exploding mobile and cloud computing segments, the acquisition of McAfee strengthens Intel’s position with a mobile security strategy as billions of connected devices becomes targets for malicious software activities.
