What Happened?
Microsemi (NASDAQ: MSCC) announced today that they have entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Actel Corporation (NASDAQ: ACTL) for $20.88 per share through a cash tender offer, for approximately $430 million net of Actel’s projected cash balance at closing.
According to the announcement no approval of the shareholders is required in connection with the proposed transaction and terms of the agreement were unanimously approved by the boards of directors of both Microsemi and Actel.
VDC’s View
VDC has been surveying embedded engineers use of FPGAs within their development projects for several years. Based on VDC’s 2010 embedded engineer survey, the use of FPGA/PLD’s in embedded development projects is expected to increase from 28.9% to 40.9% within the next two years, which speaks to the potential benefits that the acquisition of Actel might have for Microsemi product offerings.
