VDC attended the RSA Conference 2013 in San Francisco last week, a remarkable show that featured nearly 400 exhibiting companies and keynotes from Condoleezza Rice and Jimmy Wales, among others. The tagline for this year’s show was “Security in Knowledge – Mastering Data. Securing the World,” a theme that is perfectly aligned with three of VDC’s latest research initiatives:
- Security & The Internet of Things
- M2M Communications – Connecting Next Generation Devices
- Rich Media and Big Data in Embedded Systems

WALKING THE FLOOR
VDC met with more than 25 vendors of enterprise, mobile, and embedded security technologies at the show:
AhnLab showed off its TrusGuard line of products, security solutions that integrate firewall, IPS, VPN, anti-virus, and anti-spam technologies to protect corporate networks.
Arxan Technologies and Appthority announced a partnership centered on increasing trust in mobile apps and defending the app ecosystem against malicious threats. Arxan’s Application Integrity Protection technology is a major component of the combined solution. Arxan and VDC also discussed Arxan’s embedded security solution, EnsureIT, which is designed to protect keys, code, data, and intellectual property in embedded software.
Aspect Security discussed its Contrast product, which monitors applications during software testing and automatically identifies security vulnerabilities. Also, Aspect was awarded the Gold medal for “Best Web Application Security Product” in the 2013 Global Excellence Awards produced by Info Security Products Guide.
Bitzer Mobile shared details regarding the Bitzer Enterprise Application Mobility (BEAM) product, which isolates corporate access and data from employees’ personal apps on mobile devices through the use of secure containers.
Cypherbridge Systems demonstrated the recent integration of its secure Cloud Device Kit with Express Logic platforms. This solution targets the smart grid, energy management, telemetry, point-of-sale, and gaming industries, providing secure JSON/XMPP connectivity for M2M devices. Cypherbridge also presented a new uVPN SDK for Android development. This SDK provides IKE/IPsec network encryption and firewall protection.
EdgeWave discussed the EdgeWave Mobile Security product, which provides cross-platform Web and social media security for mobile phones, tablets, and laptops. EdgeWave Mobile Security also integrates with EdgeWave Mobile Device Management and other MDM solutions.
Elliptic Technologies shared details around its embedded silicon security solutions, including the tVault family of products. tVault products, which integrate seamlessly with ARM-based systems to provide robust security inside Trusted Execution Environments, are designed for semiconductor manufacturers and consumer electronics OEMs. tVault technology helps to protect sensitive information by ensuring that only authorized applications are permitted access.
Fixmo announced Fixmo Labs, a research and commercialization organization tasked with fostering innovation for securing the next generation of mobile computing technologies. Fixmo Labs, with collaboration from other global organizations such as the Singapore Institute for Infocomm Research, is focused on a number of key areas, including mobile device vulnerability discovery and advanced authentication methods.
Intercede discussed MyID, a solution for virtual smart cards for Windows 8 systems. MyID provides virtual smart card management capabilities that ensure user and credential authentication.
LynuxWorks demonstrated LynxSecure 5.2, which is now capable of detecting zero-day rootkits and bootkits in real time. LynxSecure also prevents future infections by remotely cleaning infected machines once malware is detected. It was also announced that McAfee had acquired the ValidEdge anti-malware sandboxing technology from LynuxWorks. McAfee is expected to integrate this technology into its product line later this year.
Metaforic showcased its anti-tamper technology for mobile apps. Metaforic’s solution helps protect against man-in-the-middle attacks, custom malware, data theft attempts, and other vulnerabilities. Metaforic also discussed its OEM solution, which helps protect devices by injecting a software immune system into the device’s operating system and applications. This immune system is designed to constantly monitor itself, ensuring that software runs exactly as intended and addressing any problems discovered.
Securonix shared details regarding the recently announced Securonix version 4.0, which provides real-time intelligence for prevention and rapid detection of IT security threats. This product combines global and internal threat intelligence on users, systems, and individual activities at the transaction level, and can help protect against zero-day attacks, insider threats, and enterprise fraud.
Spirent discussed Spirent Studio Security, a solution designed to increase the quality of network devices and reduce defects by testing unique protocols and troubleshooting any uncovered problems. Spirent Studio Security measures the ability of network devices to defend against an array or known attacks, including targeted DDoS attacks, malware, and spam.
StrikeForce Technologies demonstrated its GuardedID anti-keylogging solution. The unique approach of GuardedID protects against keyloggers by encrypting each individual keystroke and notifying users if other software attempts to bypass the system. This active approach to keylogger protection bypasses some of the weaknesses of traditional anti-virus software, specifically the delay inherent in updating anti-virus definitions after discovering a new threat. This technology is currently available only for PCs, but a mobile version could be a compelling solution for BYOD organizations worldwide.
wolfSSL discussed its embedded security solutions, including SSL libraries for C and C++ development, and the yaSSL Embedded Web Server.
Yubico demonstrated the latest version of Yubikey NEO, an authentication solution that issues one-time passwords through both USB and NFC interfaces. Yubikey NEO’s NFC technology enables the contactless authentication of mobile devices, and currently supports Android, BlackBerry, Symbian, and Windows.
Other leading exhibitors included Airwatch, BlackBerry, Cisco, Coverity, Cyber-Ark, Dell, ESET, Firemon, Freescale, Huawei, IBM Security, Intel, Kaspersky Lab, Klocwork, Mocana, Motorola Solutions, Netronome, Oracle, Ping Identity, Qualys, RSA, Sophos, Symantec, Thales e-Security, Trend Micro, and many, many others.
