Embedded World Bulletin – March 2011

VDC attended the 2011 embedded world Exhibition & Conference in Nuremberg, Germany March 1st through 3rd. This bulletin presents a summary of the event. This is the second time VDC Research has attended embedded world and, according to the show closing report, there were over 800 international exhibiting companies and 19,022 trade visitors. Both represent another year of record numbers of exhibitors and visitors participating in the conference. The embedded world 2011 exhibition and conference opened today. VDC is attending and holding meetings on the floor with more than 20 exhibitors. Intel to Acquire McAfee, Strengthen Mobile Solution Portfolio

What Happened? Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) announced today that they have entered into a definitive agreement to acquire McAfee, Inc. (NYSE: MFE) through the purchase of all of the company’s common stock at $48 per share in cash, for approximately $7.68 billion. As reported, McAfee will operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary, reporting into Intel’s Software and Services Group. The acquisition enables a combination of security software and hardware from one company to ultimately better protect consumers, corporations and governments as billions of devices - and the server and cloud networks that manage them - go online. Further Consolidation in the ESL Market – Synopsys acquires Synfora

What Happened? In its second acquisition announcement of the day, Synopsys disclosed yesterday that it has acquired assets from Synfora, Inc., a supplier of High-Level of Abstraction Synthesis tools (C/C++ to SystemC/RTL). VDC’s View Synfora is just the latest in a flurry acquisitions undertaken by Synopsys (which held over $700 million in cash and cash equivalents at the end of their fiscal year in October) to deepen its Electronic System Level (ESL) tool offerings.
